Internship Objective: To provide television or broadcast related majors an opportunity to experience and participate in all aspects of community television.

Internship Availability: Fall, Spring, Summer I & II annually

Number of Internships Available: Up to 6 per semester

Start Date: The first week of the academic semester of the internship.

End Date: The Friday prior to finals of the academic semester of the internship.

Hours Per Week: 10-15 hours/week depending on the number of weeks scheduled for the intern. Some evening and weekend hours will be required.

Academic Qualifications:
First priority will be given to FVM, Journalism and TIM majors. All other School of Communication majors and minors willbe considered if openings exist.


Note: Pre-communication students may request special permission to take this internship before they are accepted into their major.

Required Qualifications:
Must be working toward a television or broadcasting related degree
Must have means of transportation
Must have a valid driver’s license
Must be at least 18 years of age

Description of Intern Responsibilities: Interns will be given the opportunity to experience and participate in all aspects of community television. Throughout the course of the internship, interns will receive hands-on experience in digital and analog video production including digital camcorders and linear and various non-linear editing platforms. Interns will also take part in the production of live and taped studio shows and remote production shoots as well as regular live programs such as City Council Meetings and Kalamazoo School Board Meetings. Other duties for interns include basic maintenance of equipment, recycling program tapes, office facilitating, creating original programming for the Community Access Center, and various other duties. Upon successful completion of the program, eligible interns will receive a stipend. Hours are scheduled on a case-by-case basis with a minimum of 6 hours per week plus a mandatory 1 Friday and 1 Saturday per month.

Credit: College credit toward communication major or general electives. One hour of college credit is earned for 40 hours of work at the Community Access Center.

Evaluation: The evaluation will be completed by the Western Michigan University School of Communication Coordinator of Undergraduate Internships, and will be based upon the following
The student’s journal/log of all intern activities
The student’s copy of all work produced
A final paper evaluating the internship based on what the student has learned in their academic courses.
The internship sponsor’s mid-internship evaluation
The internship sponsor’s end of the internship evaluation

Calendar:
E-mail updates to the Coordinator of Undergraduate Internships every month
Additional communication via email, phone or in person as needed
All materials are to be submitted to the School of Communication’s Coordinator of Undergraduate Internships the Wednesday prior to final weeks of the semester/session registered
Internship sponsor evaluation due half way through the internship
Internship sponsor final evaluation due the Wednesday prior to finals with the rest of the material. It may be submitted with the student’s materials in a sealed envelope, or the sponsor may submit it separately by the due date.
