Internship objective: Develop and implement a public relations and media campaign which supports our mission.
Interning organizations mission: The Saugatuck Dunes Coastal Alliance is a statewide coalition of individuals and organizations working cooperatively to protect and preserve the natural geography, historical heritage, and rural character of the Saugatuck Dunes coastal region in the Kalamazoo River Watershed, beginning with the former Denison property.
Organization’s goals:
Phase 1 Goals: Protect and preserve the former Denison property and adjacent open spaces.Protect and preserve the natural geography, historical heritage, and rural character of the Saugatuck Dunes coastal region including the Kalamazoo River.Encourage and assist city, township, county, state, and federal governmental bodies to work together to develop a collaborative approach in planning and zoning that follows the ten tenets of wise land use as detailed in the Michigan Land Use Council's 2003 Final Report and the Tri-Community Comprehensive Plan Phase 2 Goals:Establish the Saugatuck Dunes coastal region as a recognized leader in community development and land use practices that conserve energy, land, historical, and natural resources; promote local, sustainable food networks through small family farms; and enhance the places where we live and do business. Conserve open space in Laketown, Saugatuck, Ganges, Manlius, and Casco townships by ensuring the diversity and sustainability of small family farms.
Semesters interns are needed: Fall, spring, Su I & Su II annually
Number of interns needed: 1
Start date: On or near the first day of the semester, negotiable
End date: On or near the last day of the semester, negotiable
Hours per week: 10-15 hours per week/depending upon the number of weeks scheduled to intern.
Academic qualifications: Declared major or minor in the School of Communication
Desired skills and qualifications: Student interns should have:
Strong writing skills
Completed Com 3500: Public Relations and Organizations
Strong research skills, including internet skills
Excellent interpersonal communication skills
Strong speaking and persuasion skills
Description of intern responsibilities: Create and implement a public relations and media campaign.

Credit: College credit toward communication major, minor or general electives. One hour of college credit is earned for 40 hours of work.

Evaluation: The evaluation and grade will be completed by Internship Coordinator Marilyn Kritzman and will be based upon the following:
The student’s journal/log/observation of all intern activities
The student’s copy of all work produced
The student’s learning objectives and progress made toward the learning objectives
Final paper
The internship sponsor mid-internship evaluation
The internship sponsor final evaluation
Method of evaluation:
Student’s journal/log: 20%
Student’s work: 20 %

E-mail updates to faculty sponsor every month.
Additional communication via email, phone or in person as needed
All materials are to be submitted to Marilyn Kritzman on the Wednesday of finals week of the semester/session registered.
Internship sponsor evaluation due half way through the internship
Internship sponsor final evaluation due the Wednesday of finals week with the rest of the material. The evaluation may be submitted with the student’s materials in a sealed envelope, or the sponsor may submit it separately by the due date.
