Internship objective: To develop hands on experience in Public Relations.

About the interning organization: The Marshall District Library is composed of the city of Marshall and 4 taxing townships and 4 contracting townships. They are looking to market themselves better throughout the community.

Interning organizations mission: The mission of the Marshall District Library is to serve its community by providing diverse informational educational and recreational materials in a supportive and accessible environment.

Intern responsibilities:
Develop a media contact list
Develop internal PR materials, guide to library, and develop a newsletter
Write press releases
Attend local business and community meetings and give library presentations
Create media arts
Make contacts within the community

Semesters interns are needed: summer I and summer II, fall, spring annually

Number of interns needed: One

Start date: On or near the first day of semester, negotiable

End date: On or near the last day of semester, negotiable

Hours per week: M-F 8am-5pm. There is possibility of completing some work in the evenings and on some weekends.

Academic qualifications: Declared major in Organizational Communication, and/ or Public Relations. An Imaging minor or several Imaging courses are preferred.

Required classes: COM 3050: Newsletter Design or demonstrated equivalent experience. COM 3500 completed, COM 4500 completed, or enrolled.

Desired skills and qualifications: Desktop publishing, MAC/PC platform, good public speaking skills and strong interpersonal skills. Be able to projects in a timely manner, be somewhat independent and be able to meet deadlines.

Credit: College credit toward communication major, minor or general electives. One hour of college credit is earned for 40 hours of work up to 6 hours.

Remuneration: $1500 stipend

Evaluation: The evaluation and grade will be completed by Internship Coordinator Marilyn Kritzman and will be based upon the following:
The student’s journal/log/observation of all intern activities
The student’s copy of all work produced, including progress made toward learning objectives
Final paper
The internship sponsor mid-internship evaluation
The internship sponsor final internship evaluation

Method of evaluation:
Student’s journal/log: 20%
Student’s work: 20 %
Paper: 20%
Internship sponsor mid-internship evaluation: 20%
Internship sponsor final internship evaluation: 20%

Calendar:
E-mail updates to faculty sponsor every month
Additional communication via email, phone or in person as needed
All materials are to be submitted to Marilyn Kritzman the Wednesday of finals week of the semester/session registered.
Internship sponsor evaluation due half way through the internship
Internship sponsor final evaluation due the Wednesday of finals week with the rest of the material. It may be submitted with the student’s materials in a sealed envelope, or the sponsor may submit it separately by the due date.
