Internship objective: To gain real-world hands-on public relations experience.

About the interning organization: LBGT Student Services offers education about gender identity/expression and sexual orientation to the WMU community and collaborates with registered student organizations and members of WMU and local community agencies to provide students with access to healthy resources, activities, and support services.

Interning organizations mission: The mission of the office of Lesbian, Bisexual, Gay, and Transgender (LBGT) Student Services is to promote an open and affirming environment on campus through advocacy and education.

Semesters interns are needed: fall 2008, spring 2009

Number of interns needed: One

Start date: On or near the first day of the semester, negotiable

End date: On or near the last day of the semester, negotiable

Hours per week: 10-15 hours per week/depending upon the number of weeks scheduled to intern.

Academic qualifications: Declared major or minor in the School of Communication.

Description of intern responsibilities:
Fill out an application
Attend a Safe on Campus Level I Training
Attend a Safe on Campus Level 2 Training
Design and distribute various promotional and information items including, but not limited to: flyers, brochures, hand-outs, chalking and displays
Create Press Releases and coordinate with campus and community organizations to promote the programs and events of the Office of LBGT Student Services
Work with the GWS Intern, Event Planning Intern and the Coordinator to create the “Coming Out…” Newsletter for the Office and email it via our mailing list once a month
Work with the Events Planning Intern to coordinate events sponsored and/or hosted by the Office of LBGT Student Services to promote awareness of issues of sexual orientation and gender identity on campus and in the community
Work with the executive boards of OUTspoken, OUTreach and GenderYOUTH to act as a promotions liaison between the Office of LBGT Student Services and the various organizations
Work with the Kalamazoo Gay and Lesbian Resource Center to gain community involvement experience.

Credit: College credit toward communication major, minor or general electives. One hour of college credit is earned for 40 hours of work.

Evaluation: The evaluation and grade will be completed by Internship Coordinator Marilyn Kritzman and will be based upon the following:
The student’s journal/log/observation of all intern activities
The student’s copy of all work produced
The student’s learning objectives and progress made toward the learning objectives
Final paper
The internship sponsor mid-internship evaluation
The internship sponsor final evaluation

Method of Evaluation:
Student’s journal/log: 20%
Student’s work: 20 %
Paper: 20%
Internship sponsor mid-internship evaluation: 20%
Internship sponsor final evaluation: 20%

Calendar:
E-mail updates to faculty sponsor every month.
Additional communication via email, phone or in person as needed
All materials are to be submitted to Marilyn Kritzman on the Wednesday prior to final weeks of the semester/session registered.
Internship sponsor evaluation due half way through the internship
Internship sponsor final evaluation due the Wednesday of finals week with the rest of the material. The evaluation may be submitted with the student’s materials in a sealed envelope, or the sponsor may submit it separately by the due date.
