Internship objective: To prepare the intern for future jobs in the Public Relations, Marketing and Retail Sales by gaining experience implementing and working with a newly created retail sales entity within an established organization. The Café Girl Scouts is a new retail operation in the Kalamazoo area. The student intern will be heavily responsible for introducing the operation to the community and rolling out its first several months of operation.

Intern responsibilities:

To assist in the PR and Marketing for the Café Girl Scouts
To assist in managing the sale programs as a marketing opportunity.
To assist with marketing plan in both the creation and implementation phases
To plan, write and distribute news releases and public service announcements, as directed.
To assess the public relations needs and implement as directed.
To work in the café and store for retail sales experience
To assist with and work during special events.
To perform related duties as assigned to support the mission of the Girl Scouts and the Café Girl Scouts

Academic qualifications: Declared major in Communication Studies, Organizational Communication, Public Relations, or a declared minor in Communication.

Intern must have completed Com 350/0: Public Relations in Organizations

Skills and qualifications:
Excellent oral and written communications and presentations skills.
Willingness and ability to work with diverse populations.
Computer literacy with experience in graphics and word processing programs.
Ability to work a flexible schedule.
Ability to work cooperatively and harmoniously as a staff team member.
Daily access to automobile in working condition. Proof of meeting State requirements regarding auto licensing driver’s license and liability insurance.
Ability to take direction and work with minimal supervision.

Store Hours:
Monday - Friday: 8 am - 5 pm
1st Saturday of the month: 10 am - 2 pm

Semester’s interns needed: summer I, summer II, fall and spring annually

Credit: College credit toward communication major, minor or general electives. One hour of college credit is earned for 40 hours of work. A minimum of 120 clock hours of work is required for a 3 credit internship.

A student may earn up to 6 credit hours for an internship, usually over two semesters

Evaluation: The evaluation and grade will be completed by Internship Coordinator Marilyn Kritzman and will be based upon the following:
The student’s journal/log/observation of all intern activities
The student’s copy of all work produced
Final paper
The internship sponsor mid-internship evaluation
The internship sponsor final evaluation

Method of Evaluation:
Student’s journal/log: 20%
Student’s work: 20 %
Paper: 20%
Internship sponsor mid-internship evaluation: 20%
Internship sponsor final evaluation: 20%

Calendar:
E-mail updates to faculty sponsor every month.
Additional communication via email, phone or in person as needed
All materials are to be submitted to Marilyn Kritzman on the Wednesday prior to final weeks of the semester/session registered.
Internship sponsor mid-internship evaluation due half way through the internship
Internship sponsor final evaluation due the Wednesday prior to finals with the rest of the material. It may be submitted with the student’s materials in a sealed envelope, or the sponsor may submit it separately by the due date.
