External Organizational/Corporate Communication Internship

Internship objective: To gain hands on experience in external corporate communication, to present organization service to possible constituents, and to work with new clients as they use our service.

About the interning organization: Michigan Works! YOU program is a federally funded program that assists youth between the ages of 16-21 with High School/GED Completion and Job Search Assistance.

Semesters’ interns are needed: Su I and Su II, Fall and Spring semesters annually

Number of interns needed: 1-2

Start date: On or near the beginning of each semester/session/negotiable

End date:
On or near the end of each semester/session, negotiable

Hours per week:
10-15 hours per week/depending upon the number of weeks scheduled to intern.

Academic qualifications: Declared major in, Organizational Communication, Communication Studies, Interpersonal Communications, Public Relations, or a declared minor in Communication.

Interested students should have completed Com 1040, Com 2800, and either Com 3320 or Com 3350

Desired skills and qualifications: Student interns should:
Be able to work and communicate effectively with a diverse population of youth and/ or adults.
Be able to multi-task, be flexible and very organized.
Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Publisher and PowerPoint
Must be a team player as well as a self-starter.

Description of intern responsibilities:
Work directly with ETC staff to ensure community constituents have been contacted at the director level
Ensure all appropriate data is obtained from each organization (i.e. employment, contact information, position description, location, qualifications)
Analyze information and help create a workable data base of positions
Troubleshoot problems with YOU staff and constituents and help resolve issues as necessary
Assist with the gathering of resources
Help develop timetable and report schedule
Assist with the preparation and delivery of presentations
Attend YOU events and staff meetings as necessary and requested.

Credit: College credit toward communication major, minor or general electives. One hour of college credit is earned for 40 hours of work.

Evaluation: The evaluation and grade will be completed by Internship Coordinator Marilyn Kritzman and will be based upon the following:
v The student’s journal/log/observation of all intern activities
v The student’s copy of all work produced
v Final paper
v The Internship Sponsor Mid-term Evaluation
v The Internship Sponsor Final Evaluation

Method of Evaluation:
v Student’s journal/log: 20%
v Student’s work: 20 %
v Paper: 20%
v Internship Sponsor Midterm Evaluation: 20%
v Internship Sponsor Final Evaluation: 20%

Calendar:
v E-mail updates to faculty sponsor every month.
v Additional communication via email, phone or in person as needed
v All materials are to be submitted to Marilyn Kritzman on the Wednesday prior to final weeks of the semester/session registered.
v Internship Sponsor Evaluation Due half way through the internship
v Internship Sponsor Final Evaluation due the Wednesday prior to finals with the rest of the material. It may be submitted with the student’s materials in a sealed envelope, or the sponsor may submit it separately by the due date.
