Internship objective: 103.3 WKFR-FM & 107.7 WRKR is looking for Marketing and Promotions interns and offers a non-salaried internship program designed to give hands-on experience at a commercial radio station with the goal of exposing the individual to all aspects of radio. Areas covered include promotions, marketing, public relations, special event management, programming, and sales-related activities.

Interning organizations mission: To learn and work in a promotions environment that promotes relativity and professionalism.

Semester’s interns are needed: Fall, Spring, Summer I and II (combined) annually

Number of interns needed: up to 10 each semester

Start date: On or near the first day of the semester, negotiable.

End date: On or near the last day of the semester, negotiable.

Hours per week: Up to 20 hours per week for a minimum of 12 weeks

Academic qualifications: Declared majors in Film, Video and Media Studies; Media Studies, Broadcast Cable Production will be given first consideration. All other majors, minors and pre-com students may apply.

Desired qualifications: The ideal candidate is an enthusiastic, energetic, and dependable individual with a great attitude and good communication skills, who is willing to take the time and energy necessary to learn the inner workings of a radio station. Proficiency in Microsoft Word is essential, as well as the confidence to work with and interact with KFR staff, clients, advertisers, event promoters, and listeners.

Students must be receiving college credit for the internship.

Interns will need transportation to get to and from events while interning for the radio station.

Intern responsibilities may include any or all of the following:
Complete special projects assigned by the promotions director as well as implementing sales and promotional opportunities, spring and fall book promotions, remote excellence and street promotion for the stations, and work to raise the standard of excellence of on-air promotions.
Represent WKFR & WRKR in a public relations capacity at station events, including street festivals, KFR & RKR concerts, broadcasts, sales promotions, etc.
Organize, prepare, coordinate and execute promotional events for WFKR & WRKR
Maintain the KFR Freeloader listener program both on-site at events and in the office
Maintain the RKR Rocker Club Card listener program both on-site at events and in the office
Interact with listeners on a day –to –day basis whether it is fulfilling contest prizes, answering questions, etc.
Brainstorm new ideas for the radio station, its clients and advertisers
Monitoring the inventory of station promotional items such as banners, t-shirts, stickers, hats, hoodies, etc.
Learn as much as possible to better your chances at broadcasting success.
Technical production assignments may include creation of, or assist in the creation of ad spots
Assignments in Creative Services may include creating ad campaigns for customers
Assignments on-air or assisting with on-air production may also exist

Credit: College credit toward a communication major, minor or general elective toward graduation. One hour of college credit is earned for each 40 hours worked up to 3 credits.

Evaluation: The evaluation and grade will be completed by Internship Coordinator Marilyn Kritzman and will be based upon the following:
The student’s journal/log/observation of all intern activities
The student’s copy of all work produced and progress toward learning objectives
Final paper
The internship sponsor mid-internship evaluation
The internship sponsor final evaluation

Method of Evaluation:
Student’s journal/log: 20%
Student’s work: 20 %
Paper: 20%
Internship sponsor mid-internship evaluation: 20%
Internship sponsor final evaluation: 20%

Calendar:
E-mail updates to faculty sponsor every month.
Additional communication via email, phone or in person as needed
All materials are to be submitted to Marilyn Kritzman on the Wednesday of final week of the semester/session registered.
Internship sponsor evaluation due half way through the internship
Internship sponsor final evaluation due the Wednesday of finals week with the rest of the material. It may be submitted with the student’s materials in a sealed envelope, or the sponsor may submit it separately by the due date.
