Internship objective: Charter Media’s Production internship is designed to educate and train, hands on, in various aspects of Broadcast Cable Production that goes on behind the scenes at our system. The internship will provide the essential elements of knowledge, practical experience, and the ability to go from concept through the completion of a final project.

Semesters interns are needed: Su I and Su II, Fall, Spring annually

Number of interns needed: 1

Start date: On or near the first day of the semester registered; negotiable

End date: On or near the Friday before finals week of the semester registered; negotiable

Hours per week: 15-20 hours per week/depending upon the number of weeks scheduled to intern.

Academic qualifications: Declared major in Broadcast Cable Production, Media Studies or Film, Video and Media Studies

Desired skills and qualifications: Student interns should be able to work in a fast paced environment, and be able to lift and carry a minimum of 40 pounds.

Description of intern responsibilities:
Basic care and maintenance of video taping equipment
Simple use of Sony Digital Camera
Simple set-up of lighting using a Lowell lighting kit
Advertising sales operation
Basic operation and use of PC computer and software such as Adobe Photoshop and Adobe After Effects
Training on Avid Non-Linear Editing System
Script writing
Learn the working mechanics of a commercial shoot and all other production techniques to ensure a quality production
Provide Western Michigan University with a thirty second commercial as a final product

Credit: College credit toward communication major or general electives. One hour of college credit is earned for 40 hours of work. Student intern must be registered for academic credit.

Evaluation: The evaluation and grade will be completed by Internship Coordinator Marilyn Kritzman and will be based upon the following:
The student’s journal/log/observation of all intern activities
The student’s copy of all work produced
Final paper
The internship sponsor mid-internship evaluation
The internship sponsor final evaluation

Method of Evaluation:
Student’s journal/log: 20%
Student’s work: 20 %
Paper: 20%
Internship sponsor mid-internship evaluation: 20%
Internship sponsor final evaluation: 20%

Calendar:
E-mail updates to faculty sponsor every month
Additional communication via email, phone or in person as needed
All materials are to be submitted to Marilyn Kritzman on the Wednesday of finals week of the semester/session registered.
Internship sponsor evaluation due half way through the internship
Internship sponsor final evaluation due the Wednesday of finals with the rest of the material. It may be submitted with the student’s materials in a sealed envelope, or the sponsor may submit it separately by the due date.
