Public Relations Internship
Michigan Maritime Museum

Internship objective: The intern will support the overall communications efforts of the Michigan Maritime Museum including media relations, visitor profile research, and promotional partnerships. The PR Intern works on a variety of projects to strengthen the visibility of the Museum, as well as supporting the marketing efforts for fundraising and public programming

Semesters interns are needed: Spring/Summer

Number of interns needed: 1 (This is an unpaid internship)

Start date: On or near the first day of the semester, negotiable

End date: On or near last day of the semester, negotiable

Hours per week: 10-15 hours per week/depending upon the number of weeks scheduled to intern. Flexible hours.

Academic qualifications: Declared major in Communication Studies, Organizational Communication, Public Relations, Journalism or a declared minor in Communication.

Desired skills and qualifications: Student interns must have completed COM 3500 in order to be considered for this internship.

Description of intern responsibilities:
Review and update Museum media list to ensure accurate distribution of press materials.
Develop press releases about Museum programs and special events.
Coordinate a press conference to announce the beginning of the summer season.
Design and conduct a profile study of Museum visitors.
Develop and facilitate partnerships with area lodging properties to promote the Museum.
Assist with planning and coordination of a major event

Location: South Haven, Michigan

Credit: College credit toward communication major, minor or general electives. One hour of college credit is earned for 40 hours of work up to 3 credit hours.

Evaluation: The evaluation and grade will be completed by Internship Coordinator Marilyn Kritzman and will be based upon the following:
The student’s journal/log/observation of all intern activities
The student’s copy of all work produced, including progress toward learning objectives
Final paper
The internship sponsor mid-internship evaluation
The internship sponsor final internship evaluation

Method of Evaluation:
Student’s journal/log: 20%
Student’s work: 20 %
Paper: 20%
Internship sponsors mid-internship evaluation: 20%
Internship sponsors mid-internship evaluation: 20%

Calendar:
E-mail updates to faculty sponsor every month.
Additional communication via email, phone or in person as needed
All materials are to be submitted to Marilyn Kritzman on the Wednesday of finals week of the semester/session registered.
Internship sponsors mid-internship evaluation due half way through the internship
Internship sponsors final evaluation due the Wednesday of finals week with the rest of the material. It may be submitted with the student’s materials in a sealed envelope, or the sponsor may submit it separately by the due date.
