Internship objective: Providing students with a hands-on approach to public relations

About the interning organization: The Rossman Group is a full-service public relations firm specializing in issues management, media relations, crisis communication and community relations for more than 35 local, statewide, national and international clients. Interning organizations mission: Maximize your support, minimize your opposition

Semesters interns are needed: Fall, spring, summer I and summer II annually

Number of interns needed: 1 or 2

Start date: On or near the start of each semester

End date: On or near the end of each semester

Hours per week: Minimum of 15

Academic qualifications: Declared major in Communication Studies, Organizational Communication, Public Relations, Journalism or a declared minor in Communication.

Desired skills and qualifications: Strong writing skills, ability to communicate effectively, time management skills, commitment to quality work, ability to work individually and as a team, strong sense of direction, confidence in skills.

Description of intern responsibilities: Client/writing assignments, pitch and follow-up calls, online research, daily tapes and dubbing, helping to answer phones, ability to excel beyond typical duties to more elaborate and time demanding tasks.

Location: Lansing, Michigan

Intern sponsor:Vice President Andy Corner, APR

Credit: College credit toward communication major, minor or general electives. One hour of college credit is earned for 40 hours of work up to 3 credits

Evaluation: The evaluation and grade will be completed by Internship Coordinator Marilyn Kritzman and will be based upon the following:
The student’s journal/log/observation of all intern activities
The student’s copy of all work produced
Final paper
The internship sponsor mid-internship evaluation
The internship sponsor final evaluation

Method of evaluation:
Student’s journal/log: 20%
Student’s work: 20 %
Paper: 20%
Internship sponsor mid-internship evaluation: 20%
Internship sponsor final evaluation: 20%

Calendar:
E-mail updates to faculty sponsor every two weeks.
Additional communication via email, phone or in person as needed
All materials are to be submitted to Marilyn Kritzman on the Wednesday of finals week of the semester/session registered.
Internship sponsor evaluation due half way through the internship
Internship sponsor final evaluation due the Wednesday of finals week with the rest of the material. It may be submitted with the student’s materials in a sealed envelope, or the sponsor may submit it separately by the due date.
