Public Relations & Marketing Internship

Internship objective: To gain common knowledge on the fields of marketing and public relations.

About the interning organization: The KIA is a visual arts museum and school and has been in Kalamazoo for eighty years.

Interning organizations mission: The KIA offers to residents of Kalamazoo County and West Michigan quality visual arts, education programs and services that encourage the creation and appreciation of art.

Semesters interns are needed: Fall, Spring, Summer I and Summer II annually

Number of interns needed: 2

Hours per week: 10-15 hours per week/depending upon the number of weeks scheduled to intern.

Academic qualifications: Declared major in Communication Studies, Organizational Communication, Public Relations, Journalism or a declared minor in Communication. A resume is required and should include prior work history, references and academic experience.

Desired skills and qualifications: Strong communication skills, superb writing skills, strong art background, with background in photography and know desktop publisher

Description of intern responsibilities:
1. Maintain and update media list
2. Write and distribute news releases
3. Assemble press kits
4. Write and design advertisements and collateral pieces
5. Strategize media and public relations plans
6. Take photos
7. Help promote exhibitions events and art school

Credit: College credit toward communication major, minor or general electives. One hour of college credit is earned for 40 hours of work up to 6 credit hours.

Evaluation: The evaluation and grade will be completed by Internship Coordinator Marilyn Kritzman and will be based upon the following:
The student’s journal/log/observation of all intern activities
The student’s copy of all work produced
Final paper
The internship sponsor mid-internship evaluation
The internship sponsor final evaluation

Method of evaluation:
Student’s journal/log: 20%
Student’s work: 20 %
Paper: 20%
Internship sponsor mid-internship evaluation: 20%
Internship sponsor final evaluation: 20%

Calendar:
E-mail updates to faculty sponsor every month.
Additional communication via email, phone or in person as needed
All materials are to be submitted to Marilyn Kritzman on the Wednesday of finals week of the semester/session registered.
Internship sponsor evaluation due half way through the internship
Internship sponsor final evaluation due the Wednesday of finals week with the rest of the material. It may be submitted with the student’s materials in a sealed envelope, or the sponsor may submit it separately by the due date.
