Internship objective: To learn about the television industry firsthand by experiencing and participating in newsroom functions such as reporting, producing, sports, weather and news assignment desk.

Semesters interns are needed: Fall, Spring, Su I and Su II annually

Number of interns needed: up to 8 per semester

Start date: On or near the start of the semester, negotiable

End date: On or near the last week of the semester, negotiable

Hours per week: Up to 20 hours

Academic qualifications: Declared major or minor in the School of Communication. Students must have completed coursework in Broadcast or T.V production. First priority will be given to declared Media Majors (Film, Video and Media Studies, Broadcast Cable Production, Media Studies) who have completed Broadcast Journalism (Com 3590), TV Studio Production (Com 3570) and Advanced Production (Com 4570)

All interns must be registered for college credit.

Description of intern responsibilities: Interns will learn the inner workings of a top 40 market newsroom. Reporting candidates will have the experience of shadowing current reporters on staff in the field, learning how to shoot, write and interview. Producing interns will get hands-on experience selecting news content, stacking rundowns and writing. Sports, weather and news assignment desk candidates will also have the opportunity for hands-on experience, working at a CBS/CW affiliate. Other job duties include research, web work and future
planning needed by the news department.

Credit: College credit toward communication major, minor or general electives up to 6 credits. One hour of college credit is earned for 40 hours of work. All interns must be registered for college credit and provide Jon McCrary written verification of college credit on the first day of the internship.

Evaluation: The evaluation and grade will be based upon the following:
The student observation of all intern activities
The student copy of all work produced, including progress made toward learning objectives
Final paper
The internship sponsor mid-internship evaluation
The internship sponsor final evaluation

Method of Evaluation:
Student journal/log: 20%
Student work: 20 %
Paper: 20%
Internship sponsor mid-internship evaluation: 20%
Internship sponsor final evaluation: 20%

Calendar:
E-mail updates to faculty sponsor every month
Additional communication via email, phone or in person as needed
All materials are submitted on the Wednesday of finals week of the semester/session registered.
Internship sponsor evaluation due half way through the internship
Internship sponsor final evaluation due the Wednesday of finals week with the rest of the material. It may be submitted with the student materials in a sealed envelope, or the sponsor may submit it separately by the due date.
