Internship objective: A part-time position designed to support the radio station by working on events, public relations, writing web-based articles and assisting in the station.

About the interning organization: WMUK is owned and operated by Western Michigan University and broadcasts at an effective radiated power of 50,000 watts at 102.1 FM. We are a non-profit public radio station and charter members of both National Public Radio (NPR) and the Michigan Public Radio Network (MPRN). We are also affiliates of American Public Media (APM) and Public Radio International (PRI).

The majority of our funding comes from listener support. Additional funds are provided by Western Michigan University, local underwriters and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB).

Semesters interns are needed: Fall, spring, su I & su II annually

Number of interns needed: One

Start date: On or near the first day of the semester, negotiable

End date: On or near the last day of the semester, negotiable

Hours per week: 15-20 hours per week/depending upon the number of weeks scheduled to intern.

Academic qualifications: Declared major or minor in the School of Communication. The student intern must have completed at least 2 journalism or Broadcast Journalism courses and Com 3500.

Desired skills and qualifications: Student interns should/must:
1) Possess good writing skills
2) Have some journalism background
3) Be well organized
4) Be able to manage multiple tasks
5) Have attention to detail
6) Must be people oriented
7) Must be a self-starter with only limited need for direction
8) Possess a command and working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Photoshop
9) Should have familiarity with writing internet-based articles/stories
10) Have an interest in event planning
11) Be able to table pictures

Description of intern responsibilities:
Among the individual’s responsibilities will be to help write and post web-based articles about the station, upcoming programs and events, and issues the station is facing. The intern should be able to take pictures and conduct internet research. The student intern will produce a corporate newsletter that includes writing, coordinating production and distribution. The intern will help in the preparation of media materials. The student will assist in planning and execution of station events and exhibition activities. The student intern will assist in updating the station’s website.

Internship objective: A solid hands on approach for extensive broadcast education. College and high school football as well as on-air experience will be included in the internship.

About the interning organization: WXRT-FM is looking for enthusiastic summer interns who are eager to learn the dynamics of a large market radio station. Internship objective: The 94.7 WCSX Internship Program is designed to give students the opportunity to put together and execute street marketing and to be a major contributor to a major radio station’s Marketing & Promotions department. Interns will be involved in all areas of marketing including direct, mass and database marketing. If you are looking to learn more about radio broadcasting, event marketing and promotions then 94.7 WCSX is the answer.

About the interning organization: 94.7 WCSX is a Greater Media Detroit Company which also owns 101 WRIF and 105.1 WMGC. WCSX has a very successful intern hire rate within the broadcasting field. Our goal is for students to succeed in broadcasting as well as our own station interest.

Interning organizations mission: The goal for the WCSX internship program is to help up and coming marketing professionals gain knowledge & experience.

Hours per week: 12-20 hours

Qualifications: Students must be enrolled in an accredited college, university or trade school. A WCSX internship is an unpaid internship. The student MUST be receiving course credit for participation in the internship program. They must complete all university/college and WCSX paperwork and waivers prior to beginning the internship. Interested students must be interested in learning all facets of radio promotion and marketing. Students must have reliable transportation to and from assignments.

Topics will range from engineering to customer service.
An Exit interview at the end of their internship with 94.7 WCSX.
We will be looking for feedback on the nature of their experience and welcome suggestions that they may have on improving the program.

Internship objective: To provide journalism, broadcast cable production, communication studies, or media studies students with hands on experience in writing, researching, reporting, and broadcasting the news.

Internship availability: Fall, Spring, Su I & Su II, annually

Number of internships available: up to 10 each semester

Start date: The first week of the academic semester of the internship

End date: The Friday prior to finals of the academic semester of the internship

Hours per week: 10-15 hours per week/ depending upon the number of weeks scheduled to intern. Some evening and weekend hours may be required.

Academic qualifications***:
Declared major in Journalism, Media Studies, Communication Studies or Broadcast Cable Production
Enrolled at least part-time at Western Michigan University
Must meet the requirements for the School of Communication's Internship Program
***Students who have not been accepted into their major may be able to apply for a not for credit internship with the radio station.

Description of intern responsibilities: Interns will research, write and broadcast news stories. Interns will have opportunity to anchor hourly newscasts as well as report on assignments and beats. Interns will represent WIDR on campus when they cover news stories. Interns will interact with all departments in the radio station and learn the daily operations of a radio station. Interns will attend staff meetings and production meetings.

Credit: College credit toward communication major or general electives. One hour of college credit is earned for 40 hours of work at WIDR up to 6 credits.

Compensation: This is an unpaid internship. However, students who qualify for college work-study may be able to obtain a paid internship. Contact the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships at 387-6000 for additional information.

The Sports Station AM 1660 WQSN is Kalamazoo's only all-sports radio station. Internship objective: 103.3 WKFR-FM & 107.7 WRKR is looking for Marketing and Promotions interns and offers a non-salaried internship program designed to give hands-on experience at a commercial radio station with the goal of exposing the individual to all aspects of radio. Areas covered include promotions, marketing, public relations, special event management, programming, and sales-related activities.

Interning organizations mission: To learn and work in a promotions environment that promotes relativity and professionalism.

Semester’s interns are needed: Fall, Spring, Summer I and II (combined) annually

Number of interns needed: up to 10 each semester

Start date: On or near the first day of the semester, negotiable.

End date: On or near the last day of the semester, negotiable.

Hours per week: Up to 20 hours per week for a minimum of 12 weeks

Academic qualifications: Declared majors in Film, Video and Media Studies; Media Studies, Broadcast Cable Production will be given first consideration. All other majors, minors and pre-com students may apply.

Desired qualifications: The ideal candidate is an enthusiastic, energetic, and dependable individual with a great attitude and good communication skills, who is willing to take the time and energy necessary to learn the inner workings of a radio station. Proficiency in Microsoft Word is essential, as well as the confidence to work with and interact with KFR staff, clients, advertisers, event promoters, and listeners.

Students must be receiving college credit for the internship.

Interns will need transportation to get to and from events while interning for the radio station.

Intern responsibilities may include any or all of the following:
Complete special projects assigned by the promotions director as well as implementing sales and promotional opportunities, spring and fall book promotions, remote excellence and street promotion for the stations, and work to raise the standard of excellence of on-air promotions.
Represent WKFR & WRKR in a public relations capacity at station events, including street festivals, KFR & RKR concerts, broadcasts, sales promotions, etc.
Organize, prepare, coordinate and execute promotional events for WFKR & WRKR
Maintain the KFR Freeloader listener program both on-site at events and in the office
Maintain the RKR Rocker Club Card listener program both on-site at events and in the office
Interact with listeners on a day –to –day basis whether it is fulfilling contest prizes, answering questions, etc.
Brainstorm new ideas for the radio station, its clients and advertisers
Monitoring the inventory of station promotional items such as banners, t-shirts, stickers, hats, hoodies, etc.
Learn as much as possible to better your chances at broadcasting success.
Technical production assignments may include creation of, or assist in the creation of ad spots
Assignments in Creative Services may include creating ad campaigns for customers
Assignments on-air or assisting with on-air production may also exist

Internship objective: To get hands on experience in event planning and production with secure revenue streams outside of traditional on-air advertising.

Semesters interns are needed: Spring, Summer I & Summer II, annually

Number of interns needed: 1

Hours per week: 10-15 hours per week/depending upon the number of weeks scheduled to intern.

Academic qualifications: Declared major in Communication Studies, Organizational Communication, Public Relations, Journalism or a declared minor in Communication.

Desired skills and qualifications: Students must posses strong communication skills, organizational and planning skills, work & perform well in team environment, and demonstrate a minimum of intermediate level computer skills in MS office and Internet Explorer

Desired skills and qualifications: Familiar with reporting and news-casting. Writing and verbal communications skills. Familiar with computer and radio broadcast editing software and equipment.

Description of intern responsibilities: Production assistance on live programming with possible on-air work on Saturday Morning Show. News department assistance including reporting, writing, editing and producing news stories. Commercial production.

Internship objective: To provide journalism, public relations, broadcast cable production or media studies students a full radio news department experience. Interns will leave the internship with a portfolio of writing samples and audio produced.

Internship availability: Fall, Spring, Su I & Su II, annually

Number of internships available: Up to 4 per semester

Start date: The first week of the academic semester of the internship.

End date: The Friday prior to finals of the academic semester of the internship.

Hours per week: 10-15 hours per week/ depending upon the number of weeks scheduled to intern. Some evening and weekend hours may be required.

Academic qualifications:
Declared major in Journalism, Media Studies, Communication Studies, Broadcast Cable Production, or Film, Video and Media Studies
A grade point of 3.0 or greater in writing intensive classes
Junior status
Completion of at least 3 of: COM 4430, JRN 1000, JRN 2100, COM 3590, COM 2570

Additional qualifications:
Interest in journalism, especially public radio journalism
Excellent writing skills
Fundamental understanding of local government
Must provide own transportation
Valid Michigan Driver’s License
Professional attire and image
Computer skills and experience in audio editing
Ability to use audio recording equipment
Student must provide a copy of their work, on CD or DVD, to the Communication Resouce Center (Clifford Center) at the conclusion of their internship.

Description of intern responsibilities: Interns will research, write, edit and produce news stories. Interns will represent WMUK in the community and on campus when they cover news stories. Interns will interact with all departments in the radio station and learn the daily operations of a radio station. Interns will attend staff meetings and production meetings.

Application process: Interested students should send a current resume, cover letter that includes why they are interested in this internship and at least 6 writing samples or portfolio materials to Andrew Robins at WMUK-FM. A formal interview will be conducted.

Faculty sponsor: Faculty sponsor with be the Journalism internship sponsor if the internship is being taken for Journalism practicum credit, or the Communication internship sponsor if the internship is being taken for Com 4990 credit.

Evaluation: Evaluation will be based on advancement of news room skills, including preparation and delivery of a short news cast and preparation of a longer radio piece.
