Organization: Western Michigan University Center for the Humanities is a gathering place to exchange diverse cultural and intellectual ideas.  The Center supports activities and events that nurture an engaged public life and consider the meaning of human experience.

Internship objective: The Special Events Coordinator will work with the director, student staff and Board of Directors to implement events on behalf of the Foundation.

Description of intern responsibilities: The Special Events Coordinator Intern will work with the director, student staff and Board of Directors to plan and implement three specific events.
1. Parking sticker sales: Prepare marketing plan, and advertising campaign to promote parking sticker sales to students living on and off campus.
2. Fall Alumni Event: Plan and implement a tailgate type event for Wesley Alumni coordinating with WMU Homecoming football game. This will include preparing and mailing invitations to Wesley Alumni, and advertising in the West Michigan Conference of the United Methodist Church.
3. Covenant Church Event: Plan and implement an appreciation dinner for local churches who have agreed to enter into a covenant relationship with the Wesley Foundation of Kalamazoo. This event will be held in the early spring.

Travel Department/Event Planning Internship

Internship objective: The Senior Center Travel Department Intern represents the Center and the City of Portage at group meetings and public gatherings. S/he may be asked to write news releases, prepare publications and PSA announcements, escort day trips, host a cable TV program and make oral presentations about the Portage Senior Center travel department. The Portage Senior Center travel department schedules about 30 one-day trips per year and five to seven extended trips.

About the interning organization: Portage Senior Center is a multi-purpose organization that serves about 3,000 older adults aged 55 and over annually. The Center is open from 8-5 M-F and two evenings a week. The Center offers information and referral, health promotion (education, screenings and fitness classes), creative and performing arts, recreation, college level classes, many interest groups, support groups, volunteer opportunities and travel. The Center is open to all area seniors.

Interning organizations mission: The mission of the Portage Senior Center is to provide, with the help of its members information, services, activities and volunteer opportunities which promote personal growth, health, friendship and independence for older persons in the area.

Semesters interns are needed: Fall, Spring, Su I & Su II annually

Number of interns needed: One

End date: On or near the Friday before finals week of the semester, negotiable

Hours per week: 10-15 hours per week/depending upon the number of weeks scheduled to intern. Hours are flexible to accommodate class and work schedules.

In addition, interns shall:

Make a minimum of a one semester commitment
Complete initial training
Complete a six week probationary period
Academic qualifications: Declared major in Interpersonal Communication, Communication Studies, Organizational Communication, Public Relations, or a declared minor in Communication.

Course work in communication and/or travel and tourism
Good organizational skills
Experience working with groups
Willingness to spend time learning about Center programs with emphasis on the travel program

Researching new travel destinations

Internship objective:
To provide assistance to the five community development directors with planning, promoting and implementing their Relay for Life events.

About the interning organization:
Since 1913, the American Cancer Society has focused on the same goal of eliminating cancer and has funded the work of over 30 Nobel Prize winning researchers. ACS is a nation-wide voluntary health organization that has three goals by the year 2015: (1) Reduce cancer mortality by 50%; (2) Reduce cancer incidence by 25%; (3) Measurably improve the quality of life for cancer patients and their families.

Interning organizations mission:
The American Cancer Society is the nationwide community-based voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives and diminishing suffering from cancer, through research, education, advocacy, and service.

Student interns should have excellent written and verbal communication skills for press releases; have the ability to create documents that meet ACS branding guidelines appropriate to distribute to media outlets; have knowledge of local media opportunities; be proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel and Publisher (PageMaker). Proficient experience in Microsoft Word, Excel & Publisher. Writing samples, portfolio and letter of recommendation from professor a plus.

Description of intern responsibilities:
Intern responsibilities would include, but not be limited to, the following:
Work with Lead Staff in planning and implementation of Relay for Life event.
Work with Lead Staff and Chair to plan and implement a successful media and communications program to include: TV, radio and print promotions, materials/distribution, and photography
Become an educated informant for RFL
Schedule media interviews
Arrange TV/Radio coverage before/during/after event
Develop public service announcements, news releases, human interest stories, etc. to promote RFL
Create a list of spokesperson contacts for media outlets
Recruit a photographer for team/event photos
OK any press release, interview, etc. with Lead Staff
Send and follow up any media information submissions
Attend regular committee meetings to report on progress
Compile all notes and records in a final report for the Secretary at Wrap-Up

Work with the GWS Intern, Event Planning Intern and the Coordinator to create the “Coming Out…” Newsletter for the Office and email it via our mailing list once a month
Work with the Events Planning Intern to coordinate events sponsored and/or hosted by the Office of LBGT Student Services to promote awareness of issues of sexual orientation and gender identity on campus and in the community
Work with the executive boards of OUTspoken, OUTreach and GenderYOUTH to act as a promotions liaison between the Office of LBGT Student Services and the various organizations
Work with the Kalamazoo Gay and Lesbian Resource Center to gain community involvement experience.

The student’s journal/log/observation of all intern activities
The student’s copy of all work produced
The student’s learning objectives and progress made toward the learning objectives
Final paper
The internship sponsor mid-internship evaluation
The internship sponsor final evaluation

Method of Evaluation:
Student’s journal/log: 20%
Student’s work: 20 %
Paper: 20%
Internship sponsor mid-internship evaluation: 20%
Internship sponsor final evaluation: 20%

Calendar:
E-mail updates to faculty sponsor every month.
Additional communication via email, phone or in person as needed
All materials are to be submitted to Marilyn Kritzman on the Wednesday prior to final weeks of the semester/session registered.
Internship sponsor evaluation due half way through the internship
Internship sponsor final evaluation due the Wednesday of finals week with the rest of the material. The evaluation may be submitted with the student’s materials in a sealed envelope, or the sponsor may submit it separately by the due date.

Internship objectives:
Participation in this internship will:
v increase the student’s sense of responsibility and help them establish positive work habits.
v provide student with on the job training to test their aptitude for a particular career before the commit themselves permanently.
v develop the needed skills and techniques that they will need to build successful careers.
v provide students with the needed skills to effectively coordinate and plan events.
v provide students the opportunity to establish positive relationship with professionals that will allow them networking possibilities for their future.
v enhance employment opportunities and provide the student with references for future endeavors upon graduation.

About the interning organization:
The goals of the David & Barbara Whitwam's-"Catch the Dream" program are:
v Provide students/family with the needed support and programs that will encourage academic success.
v Connect families to school and community resources that will promote educational achievement and social needs.
v Provide students with mentors/pen-pals and social events that encourage community involvement and promote positive relationships.
v Assist students in accessing local resources that address educational and social needs.
v Provide support services that will help students to be successful in school.
v Prepare students to enter Lake Michigan College.
v Encourage parents to advance their own education.

Semesters interns are needed: fall, spring, su I & su II annually

Number of interns needed: One

Start date: On or near the first day of the semester, negotiable

End date: On or near the last day of the semester, negotiable

Hours per week: 10-15 hours per week/depending upon the number of weeks scheduled to intern.

Academic qualifications: Declared major or minor in the School of Communication

Desired skills and qualifications:
Student interns should:
v have a positive attitude, outgoing personality, and maintain a professional relationship with the students and their families
v have some computer skills and be able to multi-task in an organized manner
v be confident in their public speaking abilities as they may be required to present program information in the community
v be dependable
v be responsible and capable of multi-tasking

Description of intern responsibilities:
v To assist the program director in program planning, coordinating events and activities for the students and other program functions
v Provide tutorial assistance to students that may need additional help
v Create Newsletters, flyers, and power point presentations about the program
v Attend program outings, workshops, and summer academy
v Work closely with students and their parents during program events
v Perform some light clerical work when needed such as answering phones, filing paperwork, maintaining contact logs
