Internship objective:  To provide agency support in various areas of nonprofit management.

About the interning organization: CASA for Kids, Inc. is a nonprofit organization whose sole function is to recruit, screen, train and monitor volunteers from the community who represent the best interest of children in the foster care system as Court Appointed Special Advocates.   CASA volunteers are appointed by the judge as sworn officers of the court to advocate for a child or sibling group in the abuse neglect system to ensure that they are receiving appropriate services and working towards the ultimate goal of a safe, caring and permanent home.  CASA volunteer are the eyes and ears of the Court and a voice for the child. 

Interning organizations mission: The mission of CASA is to provide volunteer advocates to work independently for the best interest of each child of service coming within the jurisdiction of the Barry and Eaton County Courts.  CASA's purpose is to provide strong personal advocacy for abused/neglected children within the two counties as well as furnishing thorough in-depth, objective information to the court and system professionals.



Semesters interns are needed:  Fall, Spring, Su I and Su II annually

Number of interns needed: minimum of one

Start date:  negotiable

End date:  negotiable

Hours per week: 10-15 hours per week/depending upon the number of weeks scheduled to intern.  

Academic qualifications: Declared major or minor in the School of Communication

Desired skills and qualifications: Student interns should :
 Student in areas of internship responsibilities.
·         Proficient in Microsoft applications including Word and Excel and comfortable with learning new systems.
·          Responsible, self motivated, strong initiative and ability to work independently.
·          Exudes a professional demeanor.
·         Familiarity with the nonprofit sector.
·        Articulate communication and interpersonal skills.
·       Social media experience desired.

Description of intern responsibilities:
The internship may include some or all of the following responsibilities/work experiences as determined jointly by the organization and the student intern.
I.               Fundraising/Event Support
A.    Participate in Fundraising Event Committees.
B.    Assist in developing sponsor relationships and obtaining sponsorships for fundraising events.
C.    Assist in planning of fundraising events.
D.    Participate in fundraising events.
II.             Marketing
A.   Assist with Volunteer Recruitment Efforts.
B.   Marketing with Service Groups.
1.   Identify community service groups.
2.   Schedule/assist in conducting presentations to engage the community with         CASA.              
C.  Newspaper
Assist in writing and submitting press releases and news articles.
D.   Newsletter
      Assist in putting together the electronic quarterly newsletter. 
III.           Social Media (if intern has social media experience to benefit the agency)
A.   Assist with website development.
B.   Assist with Facebook.
IV.           Donor Development/Management
A.   Assist with donor development.
B.   Assist with donor database management.
C.   Assist with donor acknowledgement.
V.             Grant Writing
A.   Assist in identifying grant opportunities.
B.    Assist in grant writing.   
VI.           Outcomes
A.  Assist with data compilation and outcomes reporting to grantors/funders.

*** Please note that all letters of offer, internship applications, position descriptions, verification of hours worked and intern evaluations shall be signed by a full-time employee or campus advisor. A student may not be supervised for internship credit by a graduate or undergraduate student.
Credit:  College credit toward communication major, minor or general electives.  One hour of college credit is earned for 40 hours of work up to 6 credit hours.
