Internship objective: To obtain experience in the field of corporate communication.

About the interning organization: Binder Park Zoo is located outside of Battle Creek, Michigan, on 433 acres of natural forests and wetlands. In the past 33 years, we have grown to be one of the leading cultural attractions in the region.

Interning organizations mission: Binder Park Zoo’s mission is to nurture empathy,
understanding, and conservation of nature.

Semesters interns are needed: Su I & Su II annually

Number of interns needed: minimum of one

Start date: On or near the first day of the semester, negotiable

End date: On or near the last day of the semester, negotiable

Hours per week: 20-40 hours per week/depending upon the number of weeks scheduled to intern.

Academic qualifications: Declared major or minor in the School of Communication

Desired skills and qualifications: Student interns should have excellent verbal and written communications skills and work well in both independent and group settings. Candidate must also be knowledgeable of current social media outlets and be dependable, creative, flexible, and enthusiastic. Organizational skills and knowledge in Microsoft Word and Excel are required.

Description of intern responsibilities: Responsibilities include assisting with research and writing of articles for zoo publications, assisting with various developmental tasks including correspondence with media, guests and sponsors, and general administrative tasks.

Location: Binder Park Zoo, 7400 Division Drive, Battle Creek, MI 49014.

Intern sponsor (at the interning organization): Kevin Krizan, Development Specialist

Credit: College credit toward communication major, minor or general electives. One hour of college credit is earned for 40 hours of work up to 6 credit hours. This internship is unpaid.

Evaluation: The evaluation and grade will be completed by Internship Coordinator Marilyn Kritzman and will be based upon the following:
 The student’s journal/log/observation of all intern activities
 The student’s copy of all work produced
 The student’s learning objectives and progress made toward the learning objectives
 Final paper
 The internship sponsor mid-internship evaluation
 The internship sponsor final evaluation

Method of Evaluation:
 Student’s journal/log: 20%
 Student’s work: 20 %
 Paper: 20%
 Internship sponsor mid-internship evaluation: 20%
 Internship sponsor final evaluation: 20%

Calendar:  E-mail updates to faculty sponsor every month.
 Additional communication via email, phone or in person as needed
 All materials are to be submitted to Marilyn Kritzman on the Wednesday prior to final weeks of the semester/session registered.
 Internship sponsor evaluation due half way through the internship
 Internship sponsor final evaluation due the Wednesday of finals week with the rest of the material. The evaluation may be submitted with the student’s materials in a sealed envelope, or the sponsor may submit it separately by the due date.

Internship objective: To provide communications student an educational opportunity through real world work experience at a commercial news/talk radio station.

Semesters interns are needed: Fall, Spring, Summer I & Summer II annually

Number of interns needed: 2 per semester

Start date: Negotiable

End date: Negotiable

Hours per week: 10-15 hours per week depending on the number of weeks scheduled. Some weekend hours may be required.

Academic qualifications: Major or minor in any School of Communications program.

Desired skills and qualifications: Familiar with reporting and news-casting. Writing and verbal communications skills. Familiar with computer and radio broadcast editing software and equipment.

Description of intern responsibilities: Production assistance on live programming with possible on-air work on Saturday Morning Show. News department assistance including reporting, writing, editing and producing news stories. Commercial production.
