Internship objective: To work with the Director of Staff Development in developing and facilitating workshops and communications on talent management.

About the interning organization: Kalamazoo Valley Community College offers a way for people to reach their goals through quality educational offerings and services, including 2-year degrees, certificates, transfer credits for four-year colleges and universities, and short-term academies for quick entry into the workforce.

Semesters interns are needed: Spring semester 2009

Number of interns needed: 1

Start date: Starts sometime in January (negotiable)

End date: On or near the last day of the semester (negotiable)

Hours per week: 10-15 hours per week/depending upon the number of weeks scheduled to intern.

Academic qualifications: Declared major or minor in the School of Communication

Desired skills and qualifications:

  1. Ability to identify, prioritize and execute critical tasks
  2. Ability to speak/present comfortably and enthusiastically to groups
  3. Derive satisfaction from developing others
  4. Be energized by continuous improvement

Description of intern responsibilities: Work with Director of Staff Development to develop and facilitate activities to build organizational knowledge and literacy around talent and strengths philosophy.

Location: KVCC Texas Township Campus, 6767 West O Avenue, Kalamazoo.

Intern sponsor: Nancy Taylor, Director of Staff Development.

Credit: College credit toward communication major, minor or general electives. One hour of college credit is earned for 40 hours of work.

Interested students should contact: Kristine Goolsby, Assistant to the Director of Staff Development, between 8am – 2pm weekdays at 488-4640 for an appointment.

Evaluation: The evaluation and grade will be completed by Internship Coordinator Marilyn Kritzman and will be based upon the following:
The student’s journal/log/observation of all intern activities
The student’s copy of all work produced
The student’s learning objectives and progress made toward the learning objectives
Final paper
The internship sponsor mid-internship evaluation
The internship sponsor final evaluation

Method of Evaluation:
Student’s journal/log: 20%
Student’s work: 20 %
Paper: 20%
Internship sponsor mid-internship evaluation: 20%
Internship sponsor final evaluation: 20%

Calendar:
E-mail updates to faculty sponsor every month.
Additional communication via email, phone or in person as needed
All materials are to be submitted to Marilyn Kritzman on the Wednesday prior to final weeks of the semester/session registered.
Internship sponsor evaluation due half way through the internship
Internship sponsor final evaluation due the Wednesday of finals week with the rest of the material. The evaluation may be submitted with the student’s materials in a sealed envelope, or the sponsor may submit it separately by the due date.

Internship objectives:
Participation in this internship will:
v increase the student’s sense of responsibility and help them establish positive work habits.
v provide student with on the job training to test their aptitude for a particular career before the commit themselves permanently.
v develop the needed skills and techniques that they will need to build successful careers.
v provide students with the needed skills to effectively coordinate and plan events.
v provide students the opportunity to establish positive relationship with professionals that will allow them networking possibilities for their future.
v enhance employment opportunities and provide the student with references for future endeavors upon graduation.

v Provide support services that will help students to be successful in school.
v Prepare students to enter Lake Michigan College.
v Encourage parents to advance their own education.

v have a positive attitude, outgoing personality, and maintain a professional relationship with the students and their families
v have some computer skills and be able to multi-task in an organized manner
v be confident in their public speaking abilities as they may be required to present program information in the community
v be dependable
v be responsible and capable of multi-tasking

Description of intern responsibilities:
v To assist the program director in program planning, coordinating events and activities for the students and other program functions
v Provide tutorial assistance to students that may need additional help
v Create Newsletters, flyers, and power point presentations about the program
v Attend program outings, workshops, and summer academy
v Work closely with students and their parents during program events
v Perform some light clerical work when needed such as answering phones, filing paperwork, maintaining contact logs
