Internship objective: The goal of our internships is to provide an opportunity to work with a progressively organized, international non-profit. Student interns will have the opportunity to contribute in a meaningful way to the development of web, social and traditional media programs.

Interns will have the opportunity to gain class credit performing professional functions designed to assist the organization in achieving its mission.

Students seeking a degree in public relations—whether agency, corporate or nonprofit—are preferred; in particular those who have successfully completed a basic level of corresponding college course work.

About the interning organization:
Studio Art Quilt Associates, Inc. is an international non-profit organization that exists to promote the art quilt. Founded in 1989 by an initial group of 50 artists, SAQA now serves over 2,600 members: artists, teachers, collectors, gallery owners, museum curators and corporate sponsors.

Interning organizations mission:
Studio Art Quilt Associates, Inc. (SAQA) is a non-profit international organization whose mission is to promote the art quilt through education, exhibitions, professional development and documentation.

SAQA's goals are to:
• Publish a newsletter and e.Bulletin addressing the professional needs of the working quilt artist.
• Publicize information about the art quilt through a web site, Professional Artist Member portfolios, and referrals to teachers and speakers for workshops and symposia.
• Educate through a series of conferences and lectures.
• Create a network of collectors, dealers and artists.
• Produce quality exhibitions, with documentary catalogues and critical reviews.
• Encourage critical writing, research and publication of articles about art quilts in the art press, popular press and scholarly journals.

Semesters interns are needed: Fall, spring, Su I annually

Number of interns needed: minimum of 1

Start date: On or near the first day of the semester, negotiable

End date:
On or near the last day of the semester, negotiable

Hours per week: 10-15 hours per week/depending upon the number of weeks scheduled to intern.

Academic qualifications: Declared major or minor in the School of Communication

Desired skills and qualifications:
Student interns should understand and exhibit good judgment, writing and overall communications skills, ability to think creatively, focus on the objective at hand and work effectively both individually and as part of a team.

Description of intern responsibilities: Interns will be a part of writing press releases, coordinating PR for planned events, developing and implementing social media strategies. Some other projects may include:
• Track and evaluate PR coverage
• Survey analysis
• Writing and editing support for scheduled publications
• Developing ideas for fundraising.
• Development and cleaning of media list / database management

Credit: College credit toward communication major, minor or general electives. One hour of college credit is earned for 40 hours of work up to 6 credit hours.

Evaluation: The evaluation and grade will be completed by Internship Coordinator Marilyn Kritzman and will be based upon the following:
 The student’s journal/log/observation of all intern activities
 The student’s copy of all work produced
 The student’s learning objectives and progress made toward the learning objectives
 Final paper
 The internship sponsor mid-internship evaluation
 The internship sponsor final evaluation

Method of Evaluation:

 Student’s journal/log: 20%
 Student’s work: 20 %
 Paper: 20%
 Internship sponsor mid-internship evaluation: 20%
 Internship sponsor final evaluation: 20%

Calendar:
 E-mail updates to faculty sponsor every month.
 Additional communication via email, phone or in person as needed
 All materials are to be submitted to Marilyn Kritzman on the Wednesday prior to final weeks of the semester/session registered.
 Internship sponsor evaluation due half way through the internship
 Internship sponsor final evaluation due the Wednesday of finals week with the rest of the material. The evaluation may be submitted with the student’s materials in a sealed envelope, or the sponsor may submit it separately by the due date.
