Internship objective: To help the organization to develop a new newsletter to communicate with stakeholders the ongoing activities. To assist the organization with creating a brochure highlighting the functions of the Dream Center. To work with the organizations website, helping to make necessary changes and jumpstart social media sites.

About the interning organization: The Kalamazoo Dream Center is a Non-profit organization. The center exists to significantly impact our community by giving hope to the hopeless, rebuilding shattered dreams and providing new opportunities for personal fulfillment to the poor residents of the inner-city of Southwest Michigan.

Interning organizations mission: Our mission is to offer true faith through charity, giving hope and opportunity to everyone.

Semesters interns are needed: fall, spring, Su I and Su II annually

Number of interns needed: minimum of one

Start date: On or near the first day of the semester, negotiable

End date: We would be interested in having interns work into the summer through August.

Hours per week: 10-15 hours per week/depending upon the number of weeks scheduled to intern.

Academic qualifications: Declared major or minor in the School of Communication

Desired skills and qualifications: Student interns should be self motivated. Individual’s should have confidence in creative writing skills and have good computer skills, i.e. Microsoft Word, Publisher. Knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite 4, and Word-press a plus.

Description of intern responsibilities: As a small non-profit, we have multiple strategies that we are working on to broadcast the organizations identity to the public. We will be working on these strategies simultaneously. This will require the tasks of quarterly newsletter, brochure development, website updating and social media communication to be going on at the same time.

Location: Working out of main office at: 1122 Portage Street, Kalamazoo, MI 49001

Credit: College credit toward communication major, minor or general electives. One hour of college credit is earned for 40 hours of work.

Evaluation: The evaluation and grade will be completed by Internship Coordinator Marilyn Kritzman and will be based upon the following:
 The student’s journal/log/observation of all intern activities
 The student’s copy of all work produced
 The student’s learning objectives and progress made toward the learning objectives
 Final paper

Calendar:

 E-mail updates to faculty sponsor every month.
 Additional communication via email, phone or in person as needed
 All materials are to be submitted to Marilyn Kritzman on the Wednesday prior to final weeks of the semester/session registered.
 Internship sponsor evaluation due half way through the internship
 Internship sponsor final evaluation due the Wednesday of finals week with the rest of the material. The evaluation may be submitted with the student’s materials in a sealed envelope, or the sponsor may submit it separately by the due date.
