Internship objective: To help build and maintain a strong hospitality partner network.
About the interning organization: With a diverse and rich community culture, Kalamazoo County is an ideal destination offering attractions, lodging, recreation, dining, and shopping for every preference and budget. Discover Kalamazoo is a one-stop resource for tourism and historical information.
Interning organizations mission: The Kalamazoo County Convention and Visitors Bureau markets and sells the destination as a distinctive visitor experience to positively impact the county's economy.
Semesters interns are needed: Fall, spring, Su I & Su II annually.
Number of interns needed: minimum of one
Start date: On or near the first day of the semester, negotiable
End date: On or near the last day of the semester, negotiable
Hours per week: 10-15 hours per week/depending upon the number of weeks scheduled to intern.
Academic qualifications: Declared major or minor in the School of Communication
Desired skills and qualifications: Student interns should have the following qualifications:
• Undergraduate (Junior or Senior) or graduate Communications, Public Relations, Marketing or Graphic Design student
• Creative, ambitious, energetic and motivated to share our community with others
• Excellent skills in verbal and written communication
• Interest in and knowledge of social media opportunities and their use in public relations and marketing
• Computer technical skills, including PowerPoint, MS Word, Excel, InDesign and Photoshop
• Must be reliable and demonstrate excellent follow-through, project management, teamwork and technical skills
• Must be able to commit to the position through late July/early August
Description of intern responsibilities: Intern responsibilities will include the following:
• Organizing, implementing and publicizing programs/events related to Discover Kalamazoo and the community as a whole
• Designing, developing and updating materials used to promote Kalamazoo County to a variety of audiences
• Developing and implementing a social media plan
• Gathering information and updating the Discover Kalamazoo website
• Organizing and updating media contact lists
• Disseminating information to media outlets
• Researching information and writing for a Discover Kalamazoo e-newsletter
• Participating in biweekly Discover Kalamazoo team meetings
• Other tasks as needed
Location: The offices of Discover Kalamazoo, 141 E. Michigan Ave., Suite 100 Kalamazoo, MI 49007
Intern sponsor: Lorraine Austin, Communications and New Media Coordinator.
Credit: College credit toward communication major, minor or general electives. One hour of college credit is earned for 40 hours of work.

Evaluation: The evaluation and grade will be completed by Internship Coordinator Marilyn Kritzman and will be based upon the following:
The student’s journal/log/observation of all intern activities
The student’s copy of all work produced
The student’s learning objectives and progress made toward the learning objectives
Final paper
The internship sponsor mid-internship evaluation
The internship sponsor final evaluation

Calendar:
E-mail updates to faculty sponsor every month.
Additional communication via email, phone or in person as needed
All materials are to be submitted to Marilyn Kritzman on the Wednesday prior to final weeks of the semester/session registered.
Internship sponsor evaluation due half way through the internship
Internship sponsor final evaluation due the Wednesday of finals week with the rest of the material. The evaluation may be submitted with the student’s materials in a sealed envelope, or the sponsor may submit it separately by the due date.
