POSITION DESCRIPTION

Job Title: Marketing/Public Relations Intern
Location: Sloan Museum / Longway Planetarium
Department: Marketing
Reports to: Marketing & Facilities Rental Manager


Section: Possible majors: Marketing, Communication, Public Relations

Compensation: This is a non-paid position


GENERAL DESCRIPTION


This is a part time position

Under the supervision of the Marketing & Facilities Rental Manager, this position is responsible for the Marketing initiatives of Sloan Museum and Longway Planetarium.

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
Intern is needed to assist with the promotion of programs and shows at the Museum and Planetarium to regional visitors including tourism industry, communities and businesses. Duties includes researching target audiences; Creating and maintaining databases; Organize and file media clippings, Respond to visitors’ and organizations’ request for information, Coordinate distribution of Museum brochures, Participating in Museum brainstorms and meetings; Assist with direct mailings; Handling requests for promotional materials; Attending staff meetings and assisting with marketing duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS REQUIRED
Ability and willingness to work independently, Formal education in related field (marketing, communication, journalism or related experience), Ability to organize time, Able to follow directions and complete tasks in an effective manner, Skill in coordinating tasks and projects, Good written and verbal skills, Computer skills, including MS Office Suite (especially Word and Excel), Comfort with speaking on the phone, Ability to work well with people.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

Working towards a Bachelor degree from a four year college or university, preferably majoring in Marketing or Communications

All internships are unpaid. Credit must be arranged through school by student.
Acceptance is based upon resume, references, cover letter, and interview. Minimum weekly hour commitment is 12 hours. Credit: College credit toward communication major, minor or general electives. One hour of college credit is earned for 40 hours of work up to 6 credit hours.

Evaluation: The evaluation and grade will be completed by Internship Coordinator Marilyn Kritzman and will be based upon the following:
 The student’s journal/log/observation of all intern activities
 The student’s copy of all work produced
 The student’s learning objectives and progress made toward the learning objectives
 Final paper
 The internship sponsor mid-internship evaluation
 The internship sponsor final evaluation

Method of Evaluation:

 Student’s journal/log: 20%
 Student’s work: 20 %
 Paper: 20%
 Internship sponsor mid-internship evaluation: 20%
 Internship sponsor final evaluation: 20%

Calendar:

 E-mail updates to faculty sponsor every month.
 Additional communication via email, phone or in person as needed
 All materials are to be submitted to Marilyn Kritzman on the Wednesday prior to final weeks of the semester/session registered.
 Internship sponsor evaluation due half way through the internship
 Internship sponsor final evaluation due the Wednesday of finals week with the rest of the material. The evaluation may be submitted with the student’s materials in a sealed envelope, or the sponsor may submit it separately by the due date.
