Internship objective:
To provide the intern with various opportunities to engage in media relations, marketing, development and other communications activities to promote the school to internal and external audiences.

About the interning organization:
Kazoo School is an independent (private) school, established in 1972. The school is unique in its progressive, hands-on teaching philosophy and its diverse social and economic enrollment. The school began an aggressive, successful marketing and communications program three years ago.

Semesters interns are needed: Su I; Su II, fall, spring annually

Number of interns needed: 1

Start date: negotiable

End date: negotiable

Hours per week: 10-15 hours per week/depending upon the number of weeks scheduled to intern.

Academic qualifications: Declared major or minor in the School of Communication, successful completion of journalism writing courses.

Desired skills and qualifications:
Excellent writing skills, especially news stories and press releases
Publication design experience (InDesign or similar software)
Understanding of media relations and public relations
Enthusiasm and strong work ethic

Description of intern responsibilities:
Media relations: Write, edit and disseminate news releases; ability to identify media coverage opportunities; work with local media to generate coverage, update and verify media contacts list, keep record of releases and all media coverage.

Marketing: Assist in development of marketing materials, including newsletters, brochures, and other publications or advertising; coordinate distribution of marketing materials.

Development: Assist in development of fundraising materials and plans; assist in development of alumni relations program

Communications: Assist in the development of communications plans for internal and external audiences.

Location: Kazoo School, 1401 Cherry Street, Kalamazoo

Intern sponsor:David Feldman, Head of School

Credit: College credit toward communication major, minor or general electives. One hour of college credit is earned for 40 hours of work up to 6 credits

Evaluation: The evaluation and grade will be completed by Internship Coordinator Marilyn Kritzman and will be based upon the following:
 The student’s journal/log/observation of all intern activities
 The student’s copy of all work produced
 The student’s learning objectives and progress made toward the learning objectives
 Final paper
 The internship sponsor final evaluation

Method of Evaluation:
 Student’s journal/log: 20%
 Student’s work: 20 %
 Executive Summary: 20%
 Learning objectives: 20%
 Internship sponsor final evaluation: 20%

Calendar:
 E-mail updates to faculty sponsor every month.
 Additional communication via email, phone or in person as needed
 All materials are to be submitted to Marilyn Kritzman on the Wednesday prior to final weeks of the semester/session registered.
 Internship sponsor evaluation due half way through the internship
 Internship sponsor final evaluation due the Wednesday of finals week with the rest of the material. The evaluation may be submitted with the student’s materials in a sealed envelope, or the sponsor may submit it separately by the due date.
