Internship objective: to gain hands on experience in the growing field on online journalism; specifically for sports.

About the interning organization: MichiganPreps.com is a member of the Rivals.com network, one of the largest sports information networks on the internet. We are dedicated to covering and promoting all aspects of high school sports in Michigan. Through our web site, we provide exposure for young athletes across the state in a format that is both professional and entertaining.

Rivals.com is one of the leading brands of delivering team-specific sports coverage. Specializes in college football and basketball recruiting, utilizing over 300 writers and reporters. Interning organizations mission: Rvials.com is always looking for ways to improve its service to their customers, no matter what it takes. They always have the fan in mind whenever upgrades or changes are made.

Semesters interns are needed: Fall, spring, Su I and Su II annually

Number of interns needed: minimum of one

Start date: on or near the first day of the semester, negotiable

End date: on or near the last day of the semester, negotiable.
Note: this internship may span multiple semesters.

Hours per weeks: The expected workload is 2 - 10 hours per week, depending on the assignments and needs of each intern and depending upon the number of weeks a student is scheduled to intern and the number of credits a student plans to earn

The schedule is extremely flexible and most work can be done from any location.

Academic qualifications: Declared major or minor in the School of Communication

Desired skills or qualifications: Experience in journalism, interest in sports

Description of intern responsibilities: Expansion of contacts, producing 4-6 articles per week, scheduling and carrying out phone and in-person interviews. Interns will cover football and basketball during fall and spring. During the spring and summer, interns will cover recruiting, camps, combines and pre-season predictions.

Interns will enjoy a very flexible and hands-on experience through a variety of assignments including writing player interviews, coaches’ interviews and team stories, information collection, and the possibility of covering many big games including the MHSAA Football State Finals at Ford Field and the Basketball Finals at the Breslin Center. Covering the State Finals is an excellent opportunity to gain experience at a major sporting venue. MichiganPreps is always looking for creative ideas from interns so the possibilities are unlimited.

Credit: College credit toward communication major, minor or general electives. One hour of college credit is earned for 40 hours of work up to 6 credit hours. This internship is unpaid.

Evaluation: The evaluation and grade will be completed by Internship Coordinator Marilyn Kritzman and will be based upon the following:
 The student’s journal/log/observation of all intern activities
 The student’s copy of all work produced
 The student’s learning objectives and progress made toward the learning objectives
 Final paper
 The internship sponsor mid-internship evaluation
 The internship sponsor final evaluation

Method of Evaluation:
 Student’s journal/log: 20%
 Student’s work: 20 %
 Paper: 20%
 Internship sponsor mid-internship evaluation: 20%
 Internship sponsor final evaluation: 20%


Calendar:
 E-mail updates to faculty sponsor every month.
 Additional communication via email, phone or in person as needed
 All materials are to be submitted to Marilyn Kritzman on the Wednesday prior to final weeks of the semester/session registered.
 Internship sponsor evaluation due half way through the internship
 Internship sponsor final evaluation due the Wednesday of finals week with the rest of the material. The evaluation may be submitted with the student’s materials in a sealed envelope, or the sponsor may submit it separately by the due date.
