Internship objective: For interns, the Housing Internship Program offers a broader experience by accomplishing new tasks and being exposed to a different housing operation at a different institution. By learning about the administration of student housing, interns will be able to contribute new ideas to their home institution. Interns also have the chance to interact with future employers and mentors.

About the interning organization: In 1977, the Association of College and University Housing Officers –International Housing Internship Program started with four schools. Today, almost 30 years later, almost 140 schools across the United States and Canada participate in one of the more prestigious and competitive higher education internship opportunities that exist.

International Internship History: The first proposal to expand the Housing Internship Program on an institution level was unveiled in Summer 2002. In Summer 2003, the first international opportunities took place at the University of Alberta and Victoria University of Wellington. Since Summer 2003, at least one host site has been out of the United States. As the committee has tried to reach out to international hosts, it has also begun to reach out to international students. Canadian students have participated as interns since 2003.

Internship organization’s mission: ACUHO-I achieves its vision by providing innovative, value-driven programs, services, research, and development as well as networking opportunities that help support and evolve the collegiate housing industry. We do this with the constant purpose of making a positive difference in the lives of members and those they serve.
